Predictions for the Future
The Virgin Islands National Park has a bright (not only sunny) future ahead. Their preservation of archeological sites will continue. The Virgin Islands National Park and the people of St. John Island take pride in their history and the park is the result of their past. Also off the coast of St. John is the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument. This is to help protect the underwater marine habitat. The coral reefs are disappearing at alarming rates and the National Monument will help show people the beautiful organisms underwater and the habitat that they live in. The park hopes to increase awareness of the life not seen under the ocean. The temperature rise causes the water temperature to also rise and this could result in coral bleaching. Coral bleaching also is cause by overfishing and extra sediment. Some of the causes can be prevent by putting regulations on construction on the islands. The Virgin Islands National Park does hope to conserve the land it is on and the land surrounding it. There are threats of privately-owned development outside park boundaries. This could be detrimental to both the park on land and the ocean. The more land that is bought around the park, the harder it will be to allow nature to expand. The developments would also cause more damage to the coral reefs because of the run off from the shallow soil from digging. The park is attempting to buy back the lands and continue growing and preserving the land.
